Hi. I don't know anything about painting, so I apologize if the question is silly, but what was the point of painting the entire canvas beige/brown, if you ended up painting over it, mostly with green and blue? Does it have anything to do with painting on top of paint, or did you just change your mind while painting?
I don't know if this is the right answer but I think he used beige/brown on the entire canvas to set up the mood. Also, layering it with other light colors other than white will make your highlights pop more.
